MD is a medical doctorate. It is the degree held by medical physicians.

There are also DO degrees, who are also physicians but a different type, an Osteopathic physician.

"MD" stands for "Doctor of Medicine. This degree is awarded to physicians (medical doctors) who have completed all four years of a Medical School program after completing a 4-year Bachelor's Degree Program. Before they can practice medicine they must devote at least one additional year to an Internship (on-the-job supervised practice) in a hospital, and a further year as a Resident (training in specialized field of medicine).
