He believed, after visiting the USA and learning from the leaders of various artistic movements, that all that could be done in art had been done. This stopped any production of his early abstract work but duly inspired something more original. With inspiration from the peeling advertisement posters near his studio in rome he took the cubists ideas of collage and added elements of dadaism (art that doesn't conform to natural ideas of beauty). This art was a physical representation of his phonetic poetry as it was fragmented and disorientated.
From this, not the collage but the Decollage was born. This is the movement where the artist only peels away posters to reveal what lies underneath. Afterwards, no further intrusion is made. He experimented with this before doing what he called the double decollage which in reality is simply a collage.
