In modern greek means "city" or "town" which refers to the buildings mostly. In ancient greek meant also "barrack", "state" and "the sum of citizens" [ΠΟΛΙΤΗΣ (politis) = citizen from which also the anagramed ΟΠΛΙΤΗΣ (hoplitis) = hoplite, man-at-arms) derives also].
