The most commonly accepted origin of the word Californiais believed to have originated in the writings of a Spanish adventure writer. Included in one of his writings was the myth of a fabled paradise, peopled by black Amazonian women (and no men) who were ruled by Queen Califia, ergo, California.

The length of the gulf east of Baja California led initial explorers to believe that California (Baja) was also an island.

The best translation of the word California comes from the combining of 2 spanish words; "Cali" short for caliente(hot) and "ornia" from the word horno (oven). So, California means "hot oven"

It's quite disputed, but the best guess is "hot as an oven" since there are 2 related dialects (Catalan & Portugese) from which that can be derived. Personally I prefer the "high mountains" transliteration from the original inhabitants.
