They had to wear a black habit (cloak) with a cowl (hood). The habit was tied at the waist with a girdle (belt) and the monk wore sandals. I think it was designed by Saint Benedict.

Didn't monks look strange with that purposeful bald patch?!

What is a monks robe called?

The term "habit" is used for the official style of dress of a Catholic or Orthodox religious, but it doesn't necessarily denote medieval-style robes. Many orders of nuns wear an official habit that looks like it was designed in the early 1960s. The voluminous black robe of a Benedictine monk (and daughter orders of the Benedictines: e.g. Cistercians, Trappists, Carthusians) is called a "cucula". It is given during the final profession of vows, and is worn for solemn religious services, but is optional most of the time. Benedictine monks are always buried wearing their cuculæ.

What is the difference between benedictine and cistercian?

Catholic Answer In the eleventh century, St. Robert of Molesme, who was a Benedictine monk founded a new monastic order based on the Rule of St. Benedict. The purpose was to live the Benedictine life upon more strict and austere lines. By the end of the twelfth century, the new Benedictine Order had 530 Cistercian abbeys and another 150 in the next century. The Cistercians wear an old white version of the typical Black Benedictine Habit. The Cistercians, in turn, were reformed in the 17th century, they are styled Cistercians of the Strict Observance or Trappists, who follow the Rule even more closely. They wear a white robe with a black scapular.
