Kumon is a Japanese-designed learning program in which students can advance at their own pace, and which uses large amounts of worksheets to practice language and mathematical skills.
Many children hate kumon as being repetitive and time-consuming. The latter is particularly important when the Kumon is added to the student's homework from school. If children do not appreciate school, there is little reason to expect that they would like Kumon any more.
In general, however, it would appear that Kumon helps pupils to do Maths, Japanese or English. It is difficult to know, however, whether Kumon does a good job at helping their students to learn the material. It would be helpful if rather than the promotions of the company and the complaints of students, parents with experience with Kumon would tell us whether or not Kumon helped their student.
Although Kumon may help, but its curriculum may be defective. In the case of maths, it has very little trigonometry and geometry is ignored.
I am currently in Kumon. I think that for reading, it helps you with your vocabulary and words, but that's all. I think that math helps me a lot, but it does get annoying to do if you are in middle or high school. Kumon doesnt cover all math subjects, but it helps you with the basic ones.
I also do Kumon and I think that the English side doesn't help at all! The maths is alright if you make an effort.
It also helps a lot if you DONT BURN/THROW away your work sheets for those of you that do that!I have worked at Kumon as a teaching assistant for a year now (i just quit) and I cant say that any of the kids actually enjoy it. More often than not they start fighting/arguing as they are so bored. Basically they don't learn much at the centre they learn at home with their parents helping them - the instructions are hard form many kids to follow - so so much for the independent learning program. I'm supposed to be marking work, not finding answers for the kids as the questions are too hard.
When I was at school I went to Kip McGrath tutoring which was REALLY a lot mroe helpful than I could ever see Kumon as being to anyone. It was a lot more interactive. For young kids, kumon sucks as they are expected to sit there are study alone. I have also had a prevate tutor which was cheaper and more effective.
