Basically it means someone is 'board certified' in that specialty or area of medicine. It is the more correct term that the board advises us to use on our business cards.

[There is some variation in use, however: some use "Diplomate" (with a long a as in mate) in the sense that one has received a diploma from the ABIM certifying that one passed their examination, rather than "diplomat" (with a short a as in mat), which refers to a professional in the area of diplomacy, generally not considered a medical specialty.]

What branches of medicine are used in neurology?

I believe that neurology mostly deals with anatomy. As a matter of fact, mastering neuroanatomy is a must for a neurologist to be able to point out the most likely place throughout the neural axis to explain a group of symptoms (and we neurologists are somewhat preoccupied -a bit obsessed, to be exact- with this localizing job). The other branches of medicine that are used in neurology are physiology, biochemistry, histology. As a branch of internal medicine, mastering basics of internal medicine is also needed.

How to Get Into and Make the Most of Your Internal Medicine Residency Program?

Internal medicine is a field of medicine that deals mainly with disease prevention. It can also be known as general practice. With more and more medical students choosing high-paying specializations in fields like oncology or neurology, there is a greater need than ever for medical students to go into internal medicine. If you are interested in this field, you will need to get into and get the most out of an internal medicine residency program. This article will give you some steps to take toward this goal.Study very hard in medical school. Much of the groundwork for getting into an internal medicine residency program will be laid before you graduate from medical school and will depend on your grades and commitment to the field.Find a professor to be a mentor to you to help you find the best residency programs for you to apply to. This does not always have to be an academic advisor, and in fact it should be someone who is a specialist in internal medicine. This person can encourage and support you, give you insight into what it is like to practice internal medicine, and write a letter of recommendation for you.Make sure you have a focused personal statement written which will help explain the reasons you want to become an internal medicine specialist. It will also help you to find the residency program that is right for you, because you will know what will best suit you. A focused personal statement will show the medical residency interview teams that you possess commitment and dedication as well.Attend as many residency interviews as you are screened for. This will increase the odds that you will be matched into a residency program that is what you are looking for.Once you have been accepted into a residency program, make sure you start off on the right foot and cultivate good relationships with your fellow residents and the doctors and nurses you will be working with. It is important that you be open to learning whatever you can during this time, and don’t be afraid to take on different tasks, no matter how mundane they may be. As a doctor of internal medicine, you will need to have a broader view to treat your patients well, so the more you are able to absorb and take on, the better doctor you will be.
