Primary sources are important because they are the original documents, written by the person himself or herself; and in many cases, they were written by people who were actually there when an event took place. When doing research, it is useful to find as many primary sources as you can, because they give you first-hand information, in the person's own words. For example, if you are doing a report on Abraham Lincoln, you can find sources about him (called "secondary sources") written by other people; but you can also find his own words and his own writings, which tell you what he was thinking and feeling about a certain issue. A good research paper will use a blend of primary and secondary sources if at all possible.
