There are usually local programs at community colleges which combine classwork with practical experience as a laborer. The person then does an apprenticeship leading to journeyman status. You should not need an expensive training program; unions and local organizations often have good training available.

An apprenticeship in Canada is 4 years on the job with 6 weeks per year at an accredited technical college, exams must be completed and passed.

Usually around 4-5 years of experience is need o be a sucessful carpenter. The ranks are Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master Carpenter.
