They are two completely separate worlds. For one, middle school kids are all unsure and awkward. They dress different, they act different. Most of them only tend to like things that are popular or "in" at the time. Middle school kids are all right in the middle of puberty and are confused about almost everything. On the other hand, high school kids are settled in to their changing bodies and are much more experienced in handling situations, like dating or getting a job. High school kids also want to stand out and be different, be individualists and try new things; they are a lot less concerned with trends and "what everyone else is doing". All in all, high school years are looked back upon fondly while middle school years aren't looked back upon at all.

In general, yes. The usual pattern is that the high school serves a larger area than the middle schools that feed into it, which in turn serve a larger area than the elementary schools that feed into them. It's atypical for students at the same middle school to go to different high schools unless parents specifically elect to send their children to a different school (such as a "magnet", charter, or parochial school).
