How do you know you sing good?

Singing is a very personal thing and depending on what kind of songs you like, or what type you might be specifically good at singing, you can usually figure out how to sing your best.

- Test out different genres. Some people are better suited to jazz, country, rock, etc.

- Your vocal range is also a factor. If you're looking for a performance piece and have a hard time hitting high notes, don't emphasize that fact by singing something out of The Phantom of the Opera, for example. If you feel confident singing it to yourself, chances are it's a good fit.

- Take voice lessons. Voice teachers can help refine techniques for breathing, diction, and if you work at it, you can eventually increase your vocal range. They help you prepare for performances, and a teacher can give you a second opinion about any songs you have in mind or give suggestions on what might sound good. Sometimes community colleges and universities offer summer fine arts/choir camps at affordable prices. You can also check out fine art camps available to attend in your state, whether they're day camps or ones you stay overnight at.

- Drink water. It clears the throat, and prevents you from passing out. 'Nough said.

- Don't eat/drink dairy products before a performance. You want your voice in tiptop shape so you can have full use of your vocal range. Anything like ice cream, milk, or cheese is going to create mucous in the throat and make it that much harder to hit very high or very low notes.

- Practice, Practice, Practice. The more you practice, whether it's by yourself or with a voice teacher, the more confident you'll feel about the way you're singing. More confidence means better chances of not screwing up during an actual performance.

- Don't scream at sports events...or anywhere for that matter. It's obnoxious, and just plain stupid if you're trying to keep your voice healthy. Wave a banner or a pompom instead.

- Practice good form and pay attention to interpretation. You want to make a song your own when singing, but note some of the things you like about what the original artist is doing with the it. Interpretation is key when singing because you're telling a story to the audience.

- Enjoy it. Musical performance is nerve wracking, but I guarantee you the feeling you get hearing applause after you know you did your best is worth it. Have confidence in yourself and you'll have an experience you can get addicted to.
