The cause in generally unknown. It could be that when a muscle is in a shortened position, it is stimulated to shorten more and thus go into a spasm. There are other explanations, some drugs cause cramps as a side effect, over exersion of muscles, dehydration, high or low sodium levels in the body, under active thyroid gland or a general nervous disorder. To relieve the pain, stretching and massaging the muscle will bring help

∙ 11y agoIt depends on the cramping involved. Running is a cause. So is ovulation. So does constipation or having an overly full stomach.
