The cause in generally unknown. It could be that when a muscle is in a shortened position, it is stimulated to shorten more and thus go into a spasm. There are other explanations, some drugs cause cramps as a side effect, over exersion of muscles, dehydration, high or low sodium levels in the body, under active thyroid gland or a general nervous disorder.
