Ikebana (flower arrangement)
Karaoke singing, esp in groups
Drinking sake
Making origami (paper folded into flowers, birds, dolls etc)
Outing and picnicking in their uniquely beautiful natural scenery, usu with 'bentou' (lunch boxes made ready for such occasions, school etc)
Watching TV anime, drama, TV shows, and definitely the most outstanding one, drawing and reading manga.
They have many exotic and unique snacks and foods which can also be part of their everyday/habitual thing to do on the list, when outing for fun; like dango, sukiyaki
- Other hobbies that are common to every culture also apply, like music, books, net Surfing, fishing etc.
- Also, some of their rather unique public events/holidays:
- 成人の日 : seijin no hi : 'coming of age' day. They celebrate second Monday of January each year. When they turn 20, they are considered to be permitted to drink, smoke etc.
- 緑の日 : midori no hi : greenery day, 4th of May
- 敬老の日 : keirou no hi : 'respect the elderly' day, 3rd Monday in September.
- 文化の日 : bunka no hi : culture's day, somewhat teachers' day too (anything referring to art, scholastic etc)
- 花見 : hanami : (literaly:) flower viewing, refers to picnicking and casually celebrating outdoors under cherry blossom trees as the cherry petals fall, which are symbolic to the beauty of Japanese nature. Its date can differ from one prefecture to the other. in general it can vary from mid January to early May
any that we do and more, they contest all Olympic sports and have a few of there own like sumo, Kendo, judo, kempo, aikido, to name a few.

One of the reasons that there is an increased emphasis on leisure time is because leisure time is rare and hard to come by. People are so busy that they do not get much leisure time therefore, when they do, they want to make the most of it.

Improving the mind is not leisure, it is duty. We need down time devoted to pleasure and relaxation, not duty.

In the future, our leisure time may be dramatically reshaped. Due to automation, more and more jobs will be rendered redundant. This may lead to less working hours and more leisure time.
Japanese do a lot of whaling and they tell that they do this because of scientific experimentation but it is said that they do it for leisure and meat. :(
