In Ontario, a Registered Nurse is on of the two categories of nursing professionals, with the other being a Registered Practical Nurse. To be a Registered Nurse in Ontario, a candidate must have completed a baccalaureate degree in nursing or equivalent, from an approved nursing program.
Nurses themselves, alongside the unions which represent them, tend to designate nursing as a 'profession'. This may be in response to the term 'professional' being used or perceived as a value statement rather than a classification of title. Social scientists, in contrast, tend to classify nurses as 'paraprofessionals' or 'semi-professionals'. To a social scientist 'profession' is defined on a spectrum. In their field, they recognise that nursing has many characteristics of a profession, such as specialised education and a professional board, but not all, such as high levels of autonomy or personal responsibility. No doubt nurses are necessary for our society to function properly. While this is an interesting question, a much more important focus is on the role of occupations, paraprofessionals and professionals rather than the designation of those terms.

The practice of "nursing" or delivering nursing care rests upon the health assessment. A health assessment asks about or observes every area of the body, mental and social health, and identifies problems through the assessment. Without an assessment, a nurse would not be as aware of the health problems affecting thispatient, or be prepared to do the patient education that this patient needs. A lack of nursing assessment would be like asking an everyday citizen to perform open heart surgery: A nurse, with proper education, training, and assessment skills can perform nursing duties that promote and protect the health and well-being of each patient.

Advantages of utilising the nursing process are ensuring that the care patients receive is planned, ensuring it meets their individual and specific needs, ensuring the continuity of care amongst professionals as they would all follow a specific plan and providing a clearer idea about the effectiveness of the interventions by a review of whether the outcomes of care have been achieved (WHO, 1999).
It varies from School to school, but is generally 5 GCSE's A-C in any subjects, with Science being preferable. However, there is going to be a massive overhaul of Nursing Education in the next few years, so that may change, as Nursing becomes a graduate only profession.
