Of course you can.

A diploma does serve to prove to prospective employers that you were, at least once, able to actually stick with something to the finish, while the lack of a diploma... well... kind of proves the opposite. And with unemployment numbers around 10%, anything you can do to show you're a better candidate than the other guy is going to help.

But it's certainly possible to find jobs where having a diploma or not doesn't really matter, and you might find an employer willing to take a chance on you. Or you could start your own business, in which case it's nobody's concern but yours whether you have a diploma or not.

  • Cleaning houses (you will inhale many types of chemicals and dirt which could lead to Asthma and/or Allergies as well as scrubbing toilets, shower stalls and perhaps even changing litter boxes, etc.), janitor (you will inhale many chemicals as well as cleaning toilets, vomit, etc.) working construction (you will inhale many types of construction soot which could lead to asthma and/or allergies), fast-food (including cleaning toilets in the fast-food restaurant), waitress, bartender (jobs at a restaurant may require you to stand on your feet all day long which could eventually lead to varicose veins) and anything that really requires hard, physical labor. If you can't do hard, physical labor chances are it's going to be really rough on you when you look for a job.
  • For starters you should get your GED, because then you can attend a local community college, which would be cheaper and more convenient. A job wont turn you away because you have your GED, having a GED just means you've had troubles but you made it. Some of the most successful people you see on tv never graduated highschool or even got a GED. So seriously, follow what you want to do, don't let people think you can't do anything without one. They are the fools who will be watching you on tv someday. A GED, will enable you to get into many new job training programs as required by Federal guidelines that fund many of these programs. You will have many more options with a G.E.D. as well as have opportunity for financial aid from a community college, if you choose to attend.
  • Today, though, it's not possible to get many, many, many jobs -- even in some cases, the menial ones -- without a college degree... a two-year associates degree, at the very least; and, even better, a four-year bachelors degree. The reason I write "most people," though, is because there will always be someone who either lucks-into a decent job without a high school diploma; or they have so much chutzpah that they can sort of schooze their way into a decent job, by hook or by crook. And the younger and more amazing they are, the sometimes more that they can impress an older employer, and so they can often get a decent job despite their lack of a high school diploma. But such people are the exception, not the rule. And even they will one day find themselves older, and no longer in the job into which they schmoozed themselves as young people, having to support a family and needing to make serious money, and unable to land a sufficientlly high-paying job because not only don't they have a bachelors degree, but they don't even have a high school diploma!Honestly, I cannot think of a bigger mistake than not getting your high school diploma. Personally, I'd recommend a bachelors degree, too, but at the very least, get a high school diploma. At all costs... whatever it takes! When employers have many qualified applicants, all things being equal, they take one that has more education.
  • Employers want people who can read and write, think, and have basic reasoning skills. Even the military wants high school diplomas. Even the most basic employee now has to be able to read safety instructions, be able to count, measure, calculate, make notes.
  • To work in a slaughterhouse or be a landscape gardener, or work in the field picking fruit, or move bricks for a bricklayer you might not have to have a diploma. But in the US you would probably have to understand Spanish because the lead person over you will probably speak only Spanish and a little English.

Many but sooner or later you will need it. Just get a GED. To be honest, most the low wage jobs don't check, but sooner or later you will need more money than entry level.
