The main characters of the novel (Ponyboy, Sodapop, Darry) have to deal with poverty throughout the book. Ponyboy must decide whether to try and get a good education even when he is in poverty. All the characters show different ways of dealing with their circumstances. Some handle their lives well, and others do not.
