A fire is nothing but a very fast chemical reaction where oxygen (or another oxidizer) combines chemically with the fuel to form an ash. If there is no oxygen, the chemical reaction cannot happen, so there is no fire.

Fire is a chemical reaction between oxygen and fuel. The oxygen and fuel are combining to become new substances (typically CO2, H2O, and biproducts). The original state of the fuel has a lot of potential (ie stored) energy in it. The reaction with the oxygen sets the energy free. If there is no oxygen, there is nothing to react with the fuel so nothing happens.

In english, fires have to breath.

Fire needs oxygen to sustain combustion. The oxygen in the air reacts with the fuel being burned to produce heat and light. Without oxygen, the chemical reaction that produces fire cannot occur.
