The earth is almost completely round. That means that the solar rays don't strike all parts of the planet equally. Because sun's energy is spread over a larger area at the Poles, the energy at one place is less than at lower latitudes.

Currently (January 2011) the North Pole is receiving the least amount of light because it is tipped the furthest away from the sun. In six months the South Pole will receive the least amount of sunlight because it will be tipped the furthest away from the sun.
