Summer is the warmest season, and occurs between spring and autumn.
There are no 'official dates' for the start and finish of summer. The warmer season starts gradually, and sometimes we even get cold spells long after we think we should be having summer weather!
Obviously the warmer weather starts after the spring equinox, and, in general terms, things starts getting cooler after we pass the autumn equinox. However, it takes a while for the air, land and seas to heat up after the winter and spring, so there is a time lag before we really notice any difference in the general temperatures.
In the northern hemisphere, the meteorologists (weather people) reckon that summer covers the months of June, July and August.
In the Southern Hemisphere it is reckoned that summer covers the months of December, January, and February.
However, seasons often vary considerably between countries, and in some places there may not be a huge range of temperature differences between the seasons.
For more information, including information about the traditional start and finish of summer in different countries, see Related links below.
The change of the season is caused by the axial tilt of the rotation axis of the planet relative to the plane of its orbit round the Sun. The timing of changes is controlled by the position of the planet in its orbit relative to the Sun.
The vernal equinox (March 20th. when day/night length is equal) is the start of Spring.
The summer solstice (June 21st. the longest day in the northern hemisphere) is the start of Summer.
The autumnal equinox (September 23rd. when day/night are again equal) is the start of Autumn.
The winter solstice (December 22nd. the shortest day in the northern hemisphere) is when winter starts.
Obviously for lands in the southern hemisphere spring = autumn and winter = summer, however the dates of the changes remain the same.
Note, these dates do not tend to change very much (they may alter by 1 day) over a human life time (due to precession).
