It is impossible to know when the first actual tornado occurred as they have been around longer than there have been people to record them. However, the first documented case of a tornado was near Kilbeggan, Ireland in 1054.

The first known account of a tornado was near Kilbeggan, Ireland on April 30, 1054.

The biblical record states ( before 800 B.C.) "and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind." (2 King 2:11 ) There is also the "pillar of cloud" the people of Israel witnessed at the Red Sea. That storm was called a "whirlwind" in Psalm 77

The term whirlwind, however, does not strictly apply to tornadoes, but may also apply to events such as dust devils, which are common in the regions where much of the Old Testament is set.
