Global warming has been studied over the years, but not many people paid it much attention. Then in 1958 very accurate measurements of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere began, and it quickly became clear that greenhouse gas levels were rising. In the late 1980s the temperature began to rise more rapidly and global warming started to become a serious issue for scientists and governments.

Some people, especially some Americans, do not agree that greenhouse gases represent a big problem. They think that the current warming trend is not caused by human intervention, but is a natural fluctuation of the global temperatures that began warming about 10,200 years ago.

The majority of people world wide believe there is a problem caused by the release of greenhouse gases (mostly CO2) by man made operations and activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels. They cite the increase in global temperature trends in the last 50 years and believe they represent a much more rapid change in the climate than has occurred in such a short time frame before, and they believe it is caused by the green house effect, driven by greenhouse gases from human pollution. They do not agree that it is just a natural occurring climate fluctuation.
