Carbon is the fourth most common element in the earth's crust, mostly as carbonates

Your FOOD is basically carbohydrates.

Carbon dioxide is a fundamental component of respiration for both plants and animals. Plants breathe it in and animals breathe it out.

carbon is necessary for plants during day and humans can utilize it from making certain fertilizers and carbon black (soot) in carbon papers to cooling elenents in some factories using dry ice (solid carbon dioxide).It's also to some extent used in the manufacturing of colour pencils.
