Nitrogen makes up approximately 80% of Earth's atmosphere as Diatomic Nitrogen. This is two Nitrogen atoms that are bonded together with three covalent bonds (i.e a triple bond). However there will be many other compounds in the atmosphere that contain nitrogen, but will be nowhere near as prevelant as Diatomic Nitrogen.

Nitrogen is special in the atmosphere because it is abundant and stable, making up about 78% of the air we breathe. It is an inert gas, which means it does not react easily with other elements, providing a stable environment for life on Earth. Nitrogen is essential for the growth of plants and is a key component of proteins and DNA.
