Most sands are usually made out of quartz grains (pure silica), but can contain things like fragments of shells, corals etc. Desert sands normally appear red in colour, due to oxidation and consequent red staining of the sand grains. Some sands are made out of limestones, usually in tropical areas, and some contain minerals such as feldspar, magnetite, gypsum etc.

Sand is typically composed of small particles of minerals or rocks, such as quartz, feldspar, and mica. It can also contain fragments of shells, coral, or other organic materials. The composition of sand can vary depending on its location and the geological processes that formed it.
