John Muir was very important. Along with founding the Sierra Club in 1892 (a prominent environmental organization which still exists today), he helped create awareness for environmental areas that deserved protection. Most of his work was done in Yosemite National Park and he dedicated his life to its well-being. He was a biocentric preservationist (someone who believes in protecting nature because all forms of life deserve respect and consideration).
