By weathering which is the gradual wearing away of something. In this case rocks can be weathered by water (current in a large water source or heavy rains) and even wind and other things such as acid rain. Hope that clears things up!

Rocks become smooth through a process called abrasion, where they are rubbed against other materials such as sand, water, or ice. Over time, the friction from this rubbing wears down the rough edges and surfaces of the rock, resulting in a smooth texture.

When most people think of weathering, they may think of jagged rocks, shaped into that position by waves smashing at its side. There is also smooth weathering. Occasionally you'll find a rock that is completely smooth, which is pretty cool. But how do rocks get weathered smoothly?

A lot of the time when you find a smooth rock, it is because humans have made it smooth so nobody will be hurt by it, but naturally smooth rocks are weathered by wind. Without sand and small rock particles, and etc. the wind does mostly nothing, but with rock particles it can make a huge effect. If you ever see desert formations, they are mostly smooth because of the constant weathering put upon it by the sand and wind teaming up.

Thanks and that is my answer.

What causes rocks in a stream to be smooth is it weathering?

Rocks in a stream become smooth through a process called abrasion, where the sediments carried by the water wear down the rocks over time. This continuous rubbing and grinding against each other in the stream smoothens the surface of the rocks.

Which causes rocks in a stream to to be smooth?

Rocks in a stream become smooth due to the constant force of flowing water wearing down their rough edges over time. The friction and impact from water flow results in abrasion, breaking off small particles and gradually shaping the rocks into a smoother surface.

What are very smooth rocks called?

Very smooth rocks are called "polished rocks" or "river rocks" due to the smooth texture achieved from erosion in water bodies like rivers and oceans.

What causes rocks to be smooth and rounded?

Rocks become smooth and rounded through a process called abrasion. This occurs when the rocks are continuously rubbed against each other or against other surfaces, wearing down their rough edges and surfaces over time. Factors such as water flow, wind, ice, and sand can contribute to this process.

Why are some rocks smooth and other are not?

Rocks become smooth through the process of weathering, which includes abrasion from wind, water, or ice over time. Rocks that are not smooth may have experienced less weathering or may be composed of harder materials that resist erosion. The smoothness of a rock can also depend on its location, as rocks in a riverbed or along a coastline are more likely to become smooth.

By weathering. The water currents weather the rocks leaving them smooth.

When water moves on top of rocks what do the rocks become?

Why might you find smooth rocks on a beach?

Smooth rocks on a beach are often the result of continuous erosion caused by water and sand rubbing against the rocks over time. The motion of waves can wear down the rough edges of the rocks, making them smooth.

Are igneous rocks smooth?

Not necessarily. Igneous rocks can have various textures, including smooth (aphanitic), rough (phaneritic), or glassy (like obsidian). Smooth textures are more common in fine-grained igneous rocks.
