Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and tsunamis, are events caused by natural forces. Other types include technological disasters, like chemical spills or nuclear accidents, and human-caused disasters like terrorist attacks or mass shootings. Each type of disaster requires unique prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery efforts.
In law, the phrase 'common calamity' refers to a situation where two or more persons die simultaneously or in circumstances rendering it uncertain who died first. For the purposes of succession, some legal systems use presumptions as to who died first. In Scotland, the normal presumption is that the older persons died first and the younger person died second - Succession (Scotland) Act 1964, s. 31. If the younger person was to inherit from the older person, this allows successors of the younger person to inherit the estate of the older person.
