Granite is a coarse-grained igneous rock that typically consists of quartz, feldspar, and mica minerals. It is known for its speckled appearance and can vary in color from white, pink, to grey. Granite is also very hard and dense, making it a popular choice for countertops and building materials.

In a hand sized sample, granite would have visible crystals of white to pink feldspar crystals, black specks of mica or hornblende and grayish smaller bits of infilling quartz. In a weathered outcrop, granite will form structures called tors which have a rounded appearance due to exfoliation.

Limestone will fizz when vinegar is applied. Sandstone will not. Sandstone is usually composed of visible grains of sand which feel gritty to touch. Limestone is not composed of sand grains and generally does not feel gritty to touch.
