Carbon is a naturally occurring element. It can be found in three different forms- amorphous, graphite (used in pencil lead), and diamonds. Very recently a new form if carbon has been discovered called "buckminsterfullerene", it is of great interest to modern day research facilities.

Carbon can also be found in our atmosphere as carbon dioxide, the air that we humans breathe out.

It also exists as hydrocarbons, such as coal petroleum and natural gas.

What is it called when plants turn sunlight and carbon dioxide into energy and oxygen?

The process that you describe is called, "Photosynthesis".

Describe three places carbon exists in the environment outside of the living environment?

Carbon exists in the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2). Carbon can be found in fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. Carbon exists in the soil, where it plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle through processes like decomposition and soil organic matter.

In two or more sentences describe the impact of fossil fuel combustion on the global carbon cycle.?

Fossil fuel combustion releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, contributing to the increased concentration of greenhouse gases. This leads to global warming and climate change, disrupting the natural carbon cycle by altering the balance of carbon stored in the atmosphere, oceans, and land ecosystems. The excess carbon dioxide released from burning fossil fuels overwhelms the Earth's natural processes for absorbing and storing carbon, further intensifying the climate crisis.

How do you describe a carbon atom?

A carbon atom is the building block of all organic matter. It has six protons and typically six neutrons in its nucleus, with six electrons in orbit around the nucleus. Carbon atoms can form strong bonds with other carbon atoms and a wide variety of other elements, making them essential for life as we know it.

Describe many paths a carbon molecule can take through the carbon cycle?

Carbon molecules can enter the carbon cycle through various processes including photosynthesis by plants, respiration by organisms, decomposition of organic matter, combustion of fossil fuels, and diffusion between the atmosphere and ocean. Once in the cycle, carbon can be stored in plants, soils, oceans, and rocks, circulate through food chains, be released back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, or become trapped in long-term carbon sinks like fossil fuels or deep ocean sediments.
