On the bottom of the can are a series of letters and numbers example F0161nl3.
A-M (excluding I) are the months F = June
following number is the year 0 = 2010
next three number are the day of the year 161 = June 10th (the 161st day in the year)
Last set of numbers and letter are the plant that it was created at information.
there is also a four digit number on the bottom of the can example 1054 this is a time stamp.
It depends on the bottler. Here in Wisconsin cans and bottles have a two-line code. The one to focus on is the four digit number in the second line. For instance, I'm drinking a putrid bottle of Diet Pepper out of machine that is stamped 1209. The first number is the year (2011 = 1; 2012 = 2); the next three numbers are the day of the year it was bottled. So this crapola bottle for which I just threw away $1.50 on was bottled in early July, 2011. Dr Pepper believes its Diet Soda has a shelf life of 90 days. Since this is early April 2012, this bottle is woefully out of date and should have been poured down a sink around November 1, 2011. They really get skunky by the time they're, what, seven months old? When I shop at the supermarket I try to get six-packs that are no older than a month. Then they're quite tasty.
