I've done quite a bit of research on secret societies and the answers are different for each member. If you're joining the masons you might do it for business benefit or to help charities or for the social side of meeting other men with similar interests. If you're joining the mafia I'm guessing you're probably a criminal and want to extort or kill people! If you're joining the secret order of libertines it's about wild parties, royalty-behaving-badly and corruptly influencing political agendas run by your fellow party-goers. If you're in the Illuminati (if they exist) then it's supposed to be about running the world like a business and giving secret signs on television to influence presidents and kings. Who knows the real truth but I think that the biggest overall reason is power. Men are obsessed with power and all these groups seems to give the unfair advantages in different parts of society.
Men join the masons for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons will result in satisfaction in their membership. Men who become masons because they enjoy meeting a variety of people, having a close bond with other men, performing rituals (rather like acting), organizing and providing social charity, having intellectually stimulating discussions, improving themselves morally, and generally being helpful, or any combination of them will find satisfaction in the Masonic Order. Those who join in order to become rich or powerful, or to learn magical secrets will be completely disappointed.
To plagiarize the answer from the question "Why are Freemasons Freemasons?"
"Men join the Fraternity of Freemasons for the same or similar reasons as people join any other service or fraternal organisation. "
