They feel the need to hurt each other for various of reasons. It is all psychological. It depends on many various reasons such as can be because they are trying to get back at each other for a certain reason such as the other person hurt them and they feel the need to hurt the person back and make them feel the same pain that they felt from the other person's actions. It can also be because psychologically they're messed up in the head and they feel that if they hurt the person they can then be nice and sweet to them because they are hurt. It can be numerous reasons as to why. It is a really wide-open question.
It is not the world which is cruel to people but people. The world as a place on which we live is only cruel because God commands it to be, when we need reminding that it is God who is all powerful and not man.
Our natural instinct to survive makes humans natural competitors with each other. So in order to survive, we must fight for what we need and sadly what we want. Remember we are animals in the wild to. Just a little more advanced.
Some humans are just cruel people. Avoid them and look for kinder people. They ARE out there.
