its not necessarily one kind of tattoo to show respect for a loved one that has been lost. simply getting a name tattooed over the heart or elsewhere on the body can show that you have lost them. remember that tattoos are appreciated for their art and that no one has to understand your tattoos but you.

AnswerI agree totally with the previous post. If you intend to memorialize someone with a tattoo, select an image that has person meaning to you or your loved one. For example, your loved one's favorite kind of flower could be incorporated into the image, that sort of thing.

Religious images are often used, too. Most memorial-type tattoos are similar to tombstone epitaphs: name, birth-death dates and a brief message.

Find yourself a reputable tattoo studio - if you don't already have one. Talk to the artist you want to do your ink, he'll be able to give you suggestions. If the artist isn't helpful, find someone else! Getting a tattoo is an intimate and personal experience - especially the kind of tattoo you are wanting.

My own personal tattoo artist is the only artist I will allow to touch me. We've built a rapport and he knows my tastes. It is a great working relationship.

Some people don't limit themselves to one artist and that's cool. But I'll bet most people won't put up with an uncommunicative, unhelpful artist either.

Something other things you might consider:

  • Find a book or website about 'symbolism.' This may help you figure out a way to express your feeling.
  • I've seen some incredible portrait tattoos. They require a high level of skill on the artist's part and they can be expensive so don't rush into a decision.
  • always, ALWAYS ask to see an artist's 'portfolio'
  • discuss price before your already in the chair and prepped (or worse yet after the tat is finished). Tattoos can get surprisingly expensive.
  • If you opt for a custom design, do NOT hesitate to ask for adjustments or changes. Don't settle for a design that's not quite what you want. A good artist will be accommodating. They understand, and so should you, that a tattoo is permanent. (If you're going into this thinking "I can always have it removed later if I change my mind", you should give it more thought or find some other way to express yourself.) I'm very particular and I kid my own artist about driving him nuts over details sometimes. :)
AnswerA tear under one of your eyes means you lost a mate from the same gang but can also mean you lost someone you loved. AnswerMy buddy out a dove on the skin between his thumb and his forefinger in loving memory of his mother who passed.

P.S. Tattoos mean whatever you want them to mean.

AnswerI personally have no lost loved ones kind of tattoo, but I may in the future, I have friends that have done this and seen many others, they used a picture of the lost one, and they look great, just like the photo, a portrait liek a painting, it's really cool. It may be them at a certain age, if it's a child usually the age the child passed, if it's an older person, a younger photo may be used, like when they were in their prime.

My Dad Passed Away In 2009 And We Had A Great Father - Son Relationship, I Couldn't Have Asked For A Better Father In The World. Within The Next Year I Am Going To Get A Tattoo In his Remembrance, A Portrait Tattoo To Be More Specific. With His Birth date, The Passing Date, And A Personal Message. I Plan On Getting It On My Left Side Of My Chest So He Is Right By My Heart. Like The 4th Person Above Me Said If You Want Any Additions Go To The Tattoo

So If That Is Meaningful Enough To You As It Will Be Me Then I Would Go With A Portrait Tattoo. That Shows Your Loved Ones Pic And Birth date And Passing. Like The 4th Person Above Me Said If You Want Any Additions Go To The Tattoo Go Into A Tattoo Shop And Talk To Them About The Tattoo You Want And The Additions That You Want. I Would Suggest Go To Many Tattoo Shops And Get Everybody's Opinion On it, And Go To The Tattoo Shop That You Would Do Best On The Tattoo That You Want. But In My Opinion, I Would Go With A Portrait Tattoo Cuz You Will Have Pic Of The Loved One That Will Be With You Forever, But It's Up To You That What Kind Of Tattoo You Want, That Is Meaningful To You

What does a teardrop tattoo mean?

it means you killed someone or tried or you lost a loved one. Many people think it means that the person has killed someone but that's NOT true. The teardrop means the person has lost someone they have loved. (hence the teardrop represents sadness and grief)
