A supposed UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico in July of 1947.
The Roswell Incident, according to some UFO theorists, was the crash of a UFO spacecraft in Roswell, New Mexico in July, 1947. The US government supposedly recovered the remains of the alien spacecraft, dead bodies of two aliens and one surviving but badly injured alien.
There has never been the slightest shred of real evidence to support this anecdote. After press releases and statements on July 8 and 9, 1947, the incident was all but forgotten until 1978, when a ufologist interviewed USAF major Jesse Marcel about his role in the event. After many other reports and statements throughout the 1980's, the Air Force issued official reports in 1995 and 1997, dismissing claims of an alien encounter and subsequent coverup.
The available proof (records, photos, etc.) indicates that what was actually recovered were the remains of a highly-classified prototype for a spying device, called MOGUL, which was flown with a series of weather balloons and foil radar reflectors.
The Roswell UFO Incident was caused when unknown debris landed near the town of Roswell, New Mexico on or before July the 8th, 1947. The debris was confiscated by the United States Military shortly thereafter.
The United States Military claims that the debris was from a high-altitude research balloon that had crashed. UFO enthusiasts claim that the debris was from a crashed UFO. They back their claims up by observing that the material was confiscated and not shown to the public.
While the claim that it was a UFO crash is mystical and dramatic, there are several more logical reasons to believe that it was only a research balloon that dropped its payload into the field below. Most research balloons of the era were filled with hydrogen, a very flammable gas. A small leak accompanied by a static spark could have caused the balloon to crash, similar to what caused the LZ 129 Hindenburg to burn and crash in 1937. The reason why the debris was confiscated is simple. If the balloon had been collecting high-altitude samples they would not have wanted the samples contaminated. A similar instance was when the NASA Genesis spacecraft returned to earth after its sample-return-mission. The space capsules main parachute did not open resulting in a collision with desert floor at almost 200 mph. The debris was then immediately confiscated for inspection before the surviving samples could be contaminated. Finally, many balloons have crashed
The person who discovered the debris came upon it after the crash. He claimed it resembled a balloon. Only later did people claim that it was a UFO. The claims have many discrepancies in them such as when the craft actually crashed to what it looked like. The amount of people claiming to have witnessed the crash grew with the popularity of the story. While the thought of a UFO crashing near a persons hometown is dramatic and exciting, the evidence is contrary.
In 1947, the US Army sent up a balloon from White Sands, New Mexico to look for evidence of radioactive fallout from Russian atomic bomb tests. This balloon landed in Roswell, New Mexico. At first the balloon was said to be from outer space in a small local newspaper, but, was later identified as being just a balloon. Of course, no one makes any money, or gains any fame, from a simple story of a balloon; so con artists trying to make money and gain fame have kept the simple story going in an attempt to cash in on it from gullible people. It was just a balloon. If it were a spacecraft from outer space, it would not have been a small story in a local newspaper. It would be big news around the world. It was just a balloon, and nothing more.
