The book and movie are based on supposed events that took place on Long Island in the 1970's. The murdering of the DeFeo family is indeed real. Ronnie DeFeo is in prison for killing his entire family in their Amityville home on Long Island. The Lutz's bought the home afterwards and claim supernatural occurrences had taken place there. However there is no proof.
the really only proof there is that the house is haunted was a photo of a transparent figure of a boy in the corner of a room by the stairs. People are currently living there now and say they have had no problems. I know people in Long Island that know the people and they told me.
