Well I gues the Ghosts, the people in the paintings? That wut be me gues...
Unneeded addition to the story. The ghosts of Hogwarts lost many of their plots when the movies were made just because it's so expensive to animate all of them in the film.
In my opinion on the matter, the ghosts represent the history of hogwarts and how it has been and changed over the years. Plus, a place for them to be for the rest of their death if they wish. I believe that they are there for a somewhat home, and historical reasons. It did come out handy though having the ghosts there. Moaning Myrtle in COS. Helena Ravenclaw (Grey Lady) in DH. They might have also been there for entertainment purposes. I don't really believe that there is a huge reason why they're at hogwarts. Hope this helped.
Lily Evans, Severus Snape, for certain. Possible people: Longbottoms, Malfoys, .....Plus: Dumbledore, McGonagall, Flitwick, and the ghosts of course.
