Driving from Texas to Indiana, you may or may not drive through Illinois. There are several different ways you could go, some of which go through Illinois and some of which do not.
From Indiana, through Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma to Texas
You can and should avoid Illinois by going through Arkansas through Tennessee through Kentucky through Indiana or Ohio to Michigan.
Travelling from Ohio to Illinois you would travel west and travel through Indiana.

It is about an 8 hour drive going through Illinois and Indiana.
Yes it flows in to illinois, just south of Terre Haute, Indiana and continues as a boundry line. From that point, half of the Wabash River belongs to Illinois, the other half to Indiana. Literally. And continues south to about Eldorado, IL where it dumps in to the Ohio river.
