Pressure. Capillaries are small so the force of blood coming from the heart is at greater pressure when it reaches the tiny capillaries. Pressure forces the diffusion of particles in and the osmotic diffusion of substances out (mainly metabolic wastes) to the veins.

What muscles control the flow of blood through the capillaries?

There are no muscles in arteries. Arterioles have muscles which can close them, but which has no normal flow control. (Used is stress/shock conditions only) Capillaries have a muscle which can stop all flow through it - it responds to oxygen pressure and is the ultimate control of blood flow.

How is the blood flow through capillary beds locally controlled?

This involves the local control of smooth muscle in microcirculation. The metarterioles function as shunts to bypass capillaries and the rings of smooth muscle at strategic locations . They can contract to increase blood flow through capillaries and vice versa. The pre-capillary sphincters contract and relax in response to local factors only. Its contraction constricts the capillary and decreases blood flow and vice versa.

How does the application of ice to the ankle aff ect blood fl ow through the capillaries?

Applying ice to your ankle decreases the blood flow through nearby capillaries. This occurs because the capillaries constrict to conserve heat.

Trace the flow of blood through the nephron?

the flow of blood through the nephron is : enters through the afferent arteriole, then flows through the glomerulus and into the efferent arteriole. Blood then enters the peritubular capillaries and the vasa recta and then flows through the cortex and medulla of the kidneys close to the tubules Answer: so the flow is afferent arteriole, efferent arteriole, peritubular capillaries, vasa recta

Do capillaries have valves to regulate blood flow?

Capillaries do not have valves to regulate blood flow. Veins are the vessel of the circulatory system that have veins to regulate blood flow.
