Allot depends on how you are planning to make your move.

Whether you are driving or flying, renting or buying, moving your belongings yourself or by moving company, time of year etc...

Here are a few quick guidelines and things to remember:

If you are moving yourself by say U-Haul there is of course the cost of the truck which depending on size will cost you approximately $1500 for the one way trip. Add on the cost of gas, tolls, equipment and incidentals the total cost will be approx. $3000. Add another $1500 per vehicle you will follow the truck in. If you are flying there is of course the cost of airline tickets which can be had fairly cheap- approx. $150 per person plus taxes and fees so long as you don't fly between Oct. and May. Airfare to Florida is much higher in winter months as are rents and most other things.

Moving company rates vary but industry standards for a move from Portland, Maine to Tampa, Florida is $7500+ for a 4 room move.

There is the cost of food and If you are not planning on driving straight through there is the cost of lodging you should consider approx. $100 per day for both. Add another $100 per day per person for food and lodging while setting up your new home. Unless you visit beforehand to set things up you can expect it to take up to 2 weeks to get your utilities turned on. Utility companies in Florida requite either good credit or security deposits. Plan on spending between 2-3 months average security deposit for electric, water/sewer and phone. Also- i f you are renting- plan on having first and last months rent as well as a security deposit equal to 1 months rent. there may be fees such as application fees or pet fees to consider. Florida has strict licensing guidelines for pets as well. You will have 30 days to immunize and/or license any pets you bring with you or face heavy fines for not doing so. Many Realtors will not rent to you if you cannot provide proper documentation of your pet's licensing.

Florida also charges taxes and fees for any vehicle you bring into the state when you register them. These can be quite high depending on the type of vehicle. You should call ahead to DMV to prepare for this. This also must be done within 30 days as well as obtaining a Florida drivers license. There are of course fees for this.

Example cost :

26" Rental Truck- gas and incidentals included: $3000

Food and lodging for 2: $800

Rental Unit @$700 per month: $2100

Utility Deposits: $750

Pet deposit: $250-500

Licensing and vehicle registration and Fees: $1500

Pet Licensing fees : approx $125 per pet

Approx total: $7500- $8500
