The living symbol of Smokey Bear was an American Black Bear cub (Ursus americanus) found in 1950 by firefighters of the springtime Capitan Gap wildfire in the Lincoln National Forest, New Mexico, USA.
He was rehabilitated, adopted, and sent to the National Zoo in Washington, DC to live out his bear existence as mascot of the US Forest Service. He became the zoo's most popular attraction. Due to receiving as much as 13,000 letters per week from schoolchildren, the US Postal Service assigned him his own personal Zip Code, 20252.
