93 houses were flattened and badly damaged
During the Laingsburg flood of 1981, around 100 people lost their lives. Seventy-two people could not be found. One hundred, eighty-four houses were completely destroyed during the flood.

Houses were destroyed, People were sent away to live in shelters. Big buildings crushed. Buisnesses such as pubs were ruined. Shop/Pubs (etc) owners are now in debt. Several people lost their cats and a woman lost her premature newborn twins due to her house flooding.
The poorer a people, the less substantial (sturdy) the housing which can easily be washed away in a flood. When homes are demolished, usually everything owned by those same poor was also lost in the flood, so they are left with nothing.
In the floods which occurred in Queensland, Australia in 2011, current figures are 22 dead and several still missing, as of 24 January.

In the Boscastle flood of 2004, around 75 properties were destroyed and many others were severely damaged, leading to approximately 150 people losing their homes. The community came together to support those affected and the town has since implemented flood defenses to prevent similar damage in the future.

Having lost one home to the devastation of seasonal flooding, I would advise against living in such an area.
