All Dinosaurs Lived On Land. While some dinosaurs might have been able to wade or paddle through water, they did not live in oceans, lakes, or rivers. Mosasaurs and Plesiosaurs, the giant swimming reptiles that also lived during the Mesozoic Era, were not dinosaurs. Nor were the ancient flying reptiles, known as pterosaurs.

We actually know a few dinosaurs that lived in the water. Hesperonis was a flightless seabird. Birds were amazingly discovered as dinosaurs in the 20th century. Hesperonis was 5 ft long and caught fish and shellfish with its beak holding teeth. Ichtyornis is one of its relatives and also swam in the warm oceans like Hesperonis. No, all true dinosaurs were terrestrial, with the exception of birds. Animals often thought of as dinosaurs that lived in the ocean were huge marine reptiles, such as plesiosaurs, icthyosaurs, and mosasaurs.
