Southern England was the location for some of the earliest dinosaur fossil discoveries. Indeed, the first dinosaur bone ever to be described in scientific literature, part of a femur, possibly from the large meat-eating theropod Megalosaurus, was recovered from a limestone quarry near Chipping Norton in Oxfordshire in 1676.

Various places. The first four dinosaurs were found in the UK, and currently, The Wessex Formation in the Isle of Wight is a haven for palaeontologists. Many dinosaurs have been found there - Hypsilophodon, Iguanodon, Polacanthus, Pelorosaurus, Neovenator, Baryonyx, Eotyrannus, Aristosuchus and a currently unnamed velociraptorine dromaeosaurid dinosaur, which rivalled the size of the largest dromaeosaurid, Utahraptor.

I don't know if fossils of these terrestrial animals have been found in Dorset, but trace-fossils of dinosaur foot-prints have been found in Purbeck (E.Dorset) and on Portland. Further West of course, the Lower Jurassic, Lias clay of the Lyme Regis is famous for yielding many marine-reptile fossils.

Dinosaur fossils were probably found into antiquity. The Chinese certainly found fossils and thought they were dragon bones. In certain parts of China they were used in traditional medicine and is a practice that continues to this day.The documented find was a Megalosaurus found in 1676 near Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire in England. It was sent to Robert Plot. He correctly identified the bone as a femur but suggested it was from an extinct species of giant human or possibly an extinct elephant. (Later examination of the bone by Richard Brooks in 1763, as a reference to the close appearance of the fossil to certain parts of the male reproductive organ he called the bones "Srotum Humaranum"). It is not documented who found the fossil however. In 1699 Edward Lyund described a sauropod tooth found in Caswell, Cornwall, England and correctly identified it as a dinosaur fossil.Between 1815 and 1824 Reverend William Bucknall collected more Megalosaur bones and became the 1st person to describe dinosaurs in scientific journals. It was not until 1842 that the English paleontologist Richard Owen fist coined the name "Dinosaur".
