Italian food is one of the world’s favorites – pasta, Pizza and wine, usually with lots of meat. But if you are vegetarian, finding a good meat- free meal at a restaurant can be hard. It can even put you off going Italian completely. But there are actually many ‘safe’ foods to eat, if you know where to look.
-Step 1: Pasta
Pasta by itself is a meat-free food, and the Italians love pasta. Unfortunately, they also love adding meat. A simple tomato pasta, or pesto pasta, should be meat-free. Ask for a simple tomato and basil sauce on the pasta, and tell them not to add meat.
-Step 2: Salad
Salad may sound boring, but Italian Restaurants often offer great and interesting salads, such as goat’s cheese and sun dried tomato. As long as you ask the waiter to make sure no meat is added, a salad may be an excellent option.
-Step 3: Pizza
Pizza traditionally comes with many meaty toppings like salami and bacon, but it doesn’t have to. Ask for a margarita, or add toppings such as peppers, onion or olives and your pizza will be just as nice, and very filling.
-Step 4: Bruschetta
Bruschetta is Italian bread, it is crispy, although it is rarely served as a full meal, it is great for a lunch or snack. Usually Bruschetta is brushed with garlic and olive oil, so perfect if you are a vegetarian, it can come with other toppings too, so double-check before you buy.
You should be able to eat well at an Italian restaurant if you are vegetarian, most types of Italian dishes can be made without meat, and many restaurants will offer a special vegetarian menu or dishes, and cater to most people and diets.
