Corn is a grain that provides horses with a high amount of energy due to its high starch content. However, it should be fed in moderation as excessive amounts of starch can lead to digestive issues in horses. High-quality hay should still be the main component of a horse's diet.

According to a feed table, (related link below), the energy level of each grain is the following (in Total Digestible Nutrients, not Digestible Energy): Barley: 84% Corn: 88% Oats: 89% Wheat: 88% So, oats has the highest amount of energy for horses. Oats also has the highest Crude Fibre content (at 11%) than all other grains do. (Corn as CF of 2%, Barley of 5%, and Wheat of 3%).
When it is picked and used in its entirity, barley is a whole grain. Pearl barley is de-husked so it would not be considered a whole grain.
