It's produced by your body to start the process of falling asleep. You can take melatonin pills if you have trouble getting to sleep. If you do take them, I would suggest starting with about 3mg (take it on a friday/saturday night first, if you take too much you will be out cold for about half the day) and changing it as you see fit.
