Sugars, proteins, and lipids (fats and oils) that you ingest are broken down into simple sugars which are stored in the liver as glycogen or immediately converted to energy in cell's mitochondria (ATP is the molecule used to transfer energy inside the cell). For long term storage, ingested nutrients are converted to fats.

All of our energy comes from food in the form of calories. When you eat, say, a piece of bread, you chew it up, it goes to your stomach, gets a bit more digested then moves to your liver. Once it gets to your liver, the liver begins to extract nutrients, sugars, calories, and toxins (which the immune system neutralizes). The same happens in both intestines, but in the large intestine, water is also absorbed. Once absorbed, those things, especially sugar, are sent to the kidneys, and from there, are put into your bloodstream. Cells can then absorb those nutrients and sugars directly from the bloodstream. The cells then metabolize the sugars and nutrients, thus giving it energy to perform its task.
