From what i gather in the news lately
melamine can be added to milk products including powder, liquid and candy forms to cheat the product assessment process into increasing the protein content.
However melamine was added to these products knowing harmful results such as renal failure and kidney stones would be inevitable especially in the young infants who are most vulnerable to such toxins.
Melamine is a chemical compound that has been illegally added to food products to artificially increase protein content. Melamine can mimic protein in certain tests and has nitrogen content that can falsely indicate a higher protein level. However, melamine is not an amino acid or protein itself, and consuming it can have harmful health effects.
The Melamine may have been added to some Chinese Milk in 2008 to fool government officials to the actual protein content of the milk. This Melamine has adverse affect on young children and cause a great scandal in 2008.
Melamine contamination can occur when melamine, a chemical used in manufacturing plastics, is added illegally to food products to boost their apparent protein content. This practice can lead to health issues when ingested.
In the NewsInferno.com archives, I found this statement: "Because melamine possesses high nitrogen contents, it is used to falsify protein levels in foods, being added when food is diluted with other, less expensive food products or water. The addition of melamine creates the impression of high protein levels in the diluted products."
Melamine is the chemical you're thinking of, but it's not an amino acid.
Melamine is described as being "Harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Chronic exposure may cause cancer or reproductive damage. Eye, skin and respiratory irritant". Melamine is sometimes illegally used to simulate higher protein levels in food with potentially lethal effects when consumed. Chocolate milk is not supposed to contain melamine.
They probably aren't. The intentional melamine contamination is to fool tests into giving higher protein values, thereby increasing the value of the ingredient. Candy canes aren't usually made with ingredients valued for their protein content. But still keep an eye on the news.
cyanuric acid can react with melamine to create toxins in the body, melamine may be found in dairy products from time to time.
Melamine plastic, also known as melamine formaldehyde, is a hard, thermosetting plastic material made from melamine and formaldehyde. Melamine is often used in kitchen utensils and plates and became very popular in the late 1950's and 60's.
