Find out what you are consuming now, and cut that back (by a couple hundred calories or so). 1500 I think is a good target. You also have to complement that with excercise (this is very important or you will burn more muscle then fat and it won't help you become healthier).

It depends mainly on your size and activity level. Some naturally short, thin people only need about 1200, but some larger individuals need 2000. Teenage guys need even more!

Also, if you exercise a lot, you'll need to eat more calories to replace the ones that you've burned off.

The best way to determine how many calories YOU need is to use a calorie calculator (you can find tons of them online!). This will ask your height, weight, age, gender, and activity level to figure out about how many calories you should take in every day.

The number of calories you can take in depends on how many calories you are burning. If you have a fairly stationary desk job, you will need to cut down on the number of calories you currently eat in order to lose weight. If you have a fairly active job, with a lot of physical work, don't cut down too much on what you eat, because you don't want to weaken yourself and hurt yourself. Generally it is not advised for a woman to intake fewer than 1200 calories per day and 1600 calories for men.
