Yes, because you are not really doing nothing, you're living. Your heart beating and pumping blood, your lungs taking in air, your digestive system working, this is all burning calories. I don't think healthy people can burn less then 1,000 calories in 24 hours, just by being alive. Even if you were to lay in bed all day, you need calories to be alive. Otherwise, how could a human starve to death? If we didn't use calories just breathing and so on, we could go into a hibernation mode instead of starving to death.

Even when we sleep, we burn between 28 and 59 calories per hour. Also think about how animal hibernate. They consume plenty of calories though out the summer and fall, storing them up. Then they sleep for three months. While they are sleeping, they are living off those stored calories. That's why when they wake up, they are thinner.
